Fine large detached house of white brick in garden with wall to street, built 1892. Very appropriate for good-quality residential street of Oxford Road in Lexden. Designed by W. Scargill for Mr. Martin. Forms a group with 21 Oxford Road (part of important corner building 26-30 Creffield Road).

Scargill was a notable architect in Colchester; see his entry in the 'Architects' section on this web-site.

No 19 is now part of Joyce Brooks House sheltered housing complex with linking glass corridor to modern building.

ERO - building plan of house in Oxford Road (no 19), 1892, ERO D/B 6 Pb3/500 (2 plans)

------------

'... After 1876 a further area between Lexden and Maldon Roads was developed: the executors of Charles Gray Round sold part of Hospital farm on the Creffield estate in 1876 and 1878, and spacious detached houses were built in Creffield, Oxford, Gray, and Hospital Roads ...' (VCH 9)

The other buildings in Oxford Road which are included in the local list are:
1 - 1891
1a
2 and 4 - no 2 is Oxford Lodge, c 1880
2a - Creffield House
3 - 1878
5 - 1888, designed by J F Goodey, important Colchester architect
7 - 1893, designed by Goodey & Cressall, important Colchester architectural practice
9 - 1893, designed by Goodey & Cressall, important Colchester architectural practice
21 - 1886, part of nos 26-30 Creffield Road
the Nurses Home
Oxford Court

[Note: the Creffields were a wealthy Colchester family, and Charles Gray married into the family. Charles Gray Round was a member of the wealthy local Round family and inherited some of the property of the Creffields via Charles Gray - hence the names of this group of roads. Hospital Road probably relates to the Essex County Hospital rather than the farm. 'Oxford' probably derives from the associations of the Earls of Oxford with Colchester, although Charles Gray Round attended Oxford University and also unsuccessfully stood for election as MP there.]

End of terrace. Plaque on wall reads: William's Place 1881. Red brick with slate roof. Painted stuccco window lintels and cills. Replacement windows. Stucco over brick vestigal doorcase and canopy. Designed by J F Goody for W. Warren (owner). ERO W D/B 6 Pb2/249 (not checked). Built as a house on South Street. However the entrance was on the side of the house - hence it became part of Walsingham Street when this was built later. Similar to buildings in New Town which have their entrances at their sides with 'vestigal' doorcases and canopies (also designed by Goody?). Plaque on wall suggests that the owner, W Warren, was called William.

Red brick, three storeys, adjacent to the Dickens Hotel. Survival from original St Botolph's Corner. Appears to consist of two properties which share a common design of frontage. Roof missing possibly as a result of bomb damage in WW2. No cavity walls and therefore probably pre c 1885. Upper windows in the front centre and left have been replaced. Windows on the right of a different design. These have horns. If original, they suggest the building is post c 1850. Date c c 1850-80.
Nos 2-4, station house and the railway station form a prominent 19th-century group, of which the station house is a listed building.
